My grandfather raised his family in Wellsville. His name was Charles Clemons. He lived up on Clark street. My mother, Doris Maxine Clemons, and her brother, Donald and all my other aunts, were his children. I met Gaby Hayes, when I was a child at my grandfather’s house. Of course,I was too young then to know, who he really was. I even went to the Brooklyn school for a short time. I went swimming down by the Sinclair refinery. If we only knew then what we knew, later

I remember the Sinclair refinery and the oil sands we romped around in. Two of the boys I grew up with have died of cancer. Often wondered if there was any link. No matter what the weather we went swimming during final exam week. One of our favorite pastimes was fishing for trout in Coleman Creek. In most places you could step across it.

I have not been in Wellsvile for close to 40 years, but I have friends and family who have regular contact with people from the area. I am not a scientist, but it appears to me that a lot of people from the Wellsville area have had cancers of all types. We used to swim in the river above and below the refinery around Island Park and wonder what this has done for all of us. I did not realize until recently that Wellsville had a lot of tanneries earlier in the century, and who know what they had dumped into the ground. Maybe nothing, maybe not.

From my understanding, wasn’t the refinery and the land around the refinery, part of a superfund,clean-up? I don’t know if it has actually been done, yet. I remember that this came out,not long after the Love Canal debacle.

The other 3 died from one form of cancer or another and our mother died last Mom’s day weekend from tyroid cancer…there are only 4 of us kids left now.

    Something to ponder I guess…

Swimming in the Genesee at the Refinery was just something we did. Always made it a point to swim there sometime during finals. A keg of beer, a box of Charlie’s Chips and a box of Tobin First Prize Hots and meet at Elm Valley for and evening of food swimming and of course girls. Just the thought of it makes me smile.

I must submit a couple of complaints I have about the WDR both on-line and off:
I HATE the new type of the newspaper. Almost impossible to read. So small, and lighter print, I think.
Please go back to old larger type, so I can see it!
This on-line comment page would be alot easier if the newest comments are the first on the top of the page, with the oldest ones last.
    thanks

I see that Galen and Betsy read on line I was wondering if you would like to get the old Galen’s Group back together for a surprise Anniversary party ???
    JanetCoc@baylorhealth.edu

  68. DCB said:

To Hannah: Here’s a quick fix for your problem, go down to your local Walgreens & for only 15.00 you can buy a pair of reading glasses. You’ll be amazed how large the print will be! Also click on ‘Text Size’ on your computer settings, click ‘Larger’ & a whole new world will open up! I do agree with you on installing the newest comments at the top, but after marketing my own business for 30 years, this would be a negative for WDR. This way you have to scroll down & read the older ones first. I am surprised they have not figured out that each side of this is blank & prime for advertising! Hey WDR, I’ll just take 25% for that idea!!

  69. leftalleganycounty said:

People on here are funny to me… DCB, maybe you should be the one to go to Walgreens and get yourself some eyeglasses…. what hannah did say is that she did not like the font type in the NEWSPAPER. People are so critical - that is her opinion, and I believe thats what makes this country a great place to live…because we are all entitled to one. I do enjoy reading these comments and I used to enjoy reading the comments under the articles….but people in allegany county seem to be so CLOSED minded and ignorant with some of the things that come out of their mouths! On another note - thanks WDR for the new Guestbook and most importantly for the current updates on the site. Thanks

I can’t believe that they sold the Modern Diner!
I heard that they sold the Coffee Mill in RT417.
That sure was nice & they had very nice food
    there! It’s so very sad.
I truly believe that the people of Wellsville
think by bringing in (Wally World) AKA -
    Walmart it’s going to help.
May-be they are right in one aspect. But
all in all I still miss the “Old Wellsville”.
It always be remembered! To this very day I
still hold many fond memories of the way
Wellsville once was! It was truly nice.
I can even remember Angelica growing up there
during the summers. I used to play with

  120. DPM 74 said:

To: M Lyon Everything is the real deal. The sauce comes down in pint jars straight from source, The only reason I get Genesee it’s not what you see in most people coolers in Texas. Lot of questions are asked. It sets nexts to my Lone Star Beer. I also have some Iron City only about two quarts left.

  121. Sputter said:

Texas Hot sauce you can get it at the Texas Hot resturant in WLSV. My daughter brings me some @ every visit and also cuba cheese curds.
